Still missing the point.

You're posing the question to me. You're preaching to the choir, here, Doc. My point is that, in order to evaluate risks, you gotta figure out what kind of fingers are going to be pointed at you by the prosecutor. If you honestly think that's what I believe - *sigh* - then I'm failing to communicate, here. However, a prosecutor trying to make a name for himself/herself would say, to continue the analogy, "If she's wearing a short skirt ON THIS BOARD, she's trolling for sex."
And you know what? Even odds that a jury will agree. My whole theme throughout this thread has been "what does GP really have to worry about? Anything? Why does he get all bent out of shape on this stuff? Why doesn't he just let everyone, including Buffy, do their thing?" I've been trying to tell you.
It's coming back to me as "Gee, Counsel, so you really think Buffy's trolling for sex, eh?" No No No. That AIN'T the point.
The "presumption" (which is a legal term of art) regarding Jane isn't even the point. If I were a D.A., and I wanted to advance my career, I wouldn't be looking at whether I could show that someone's behavior created a presumption that a certain act was committed. We're getting way too concerned about the actual legal procedure, here, and not concerned enough about what the prosecutor is really after, which is self-advancement. That doesn't require any legal niceties.
No, as a D.A., I would be calling 20-20, Sally Jesse, or some other trash TV show and telling them how I was going to get those damn hookers offline before they destroy the fabric of America, break up all our families and give everyone the mumps. I'd get plenty of face time; get noticed, then run for judge, Treasurer or, hell, even Governor.
Do I like it that things like that happen? Hell, no! Do I think that someone would try it, and that GP's board is a ripe target? Sure do. Do I blame GP for being sensitive about what's getting posted from time to time? Nope. I think he's been a lot less restrictive than I would be, only because I would want to cover my ass every way from Sunday. I think the guy's brave to let happen the things that have happened.

For what it's worth

Counsel paints a pretty good picture of the political side of what's commonly referred to as "the law".
Yes, I'm afraid that he's right. I've never used the word "whore", but I'll use it to describe a lot of those career minded political-types out there.
But, as always, I digress...
Yes, GP is walking a thin line, taking the risks. He is the one making the decisions. Do I agree with him? For a guy whose neck isn't on the line--it's safe to say no. But then again, I'm not in his shoes. So my agreement/disagreement is of little consequence.
Doc is concerned and upset about Buffy. Again, as I said before, I respect the way he feels and his willingness to stick up for a friend. Many of us feel that way about Buffy.
But the real issue, now, is this. Where do we go from here. GP made his decision--as is his right to do so. We've expressed ourselves. I doubt very much that we're really going to change anything.
The one thing I'd like to see, aside from Buffy's return, is the continuation of the board.
Agree or disagree, let's still remain friends. More than anything else...that's the point of having the board in the first place. Sure, I like to talk about legalized prostitution. But I'm also here for the people--that means Doc, Flyfisher, Counsel, GP, Bashful...the list goes on and on...
That's my two cents. For all it's worth.

The repartee between you and Doc is good. There's food for thought to chew on. There is one scenario and many subliminal ones forming a big picture. Open minds solve problems, closed ones exacerbate them. One thing for sure...there are real feelings here, and I know I'd love a win-win situation. What you explained in great eloquence adds to this thread very much---I have feelings in different directions for all parties. I care and respect them all. Thanks for adding insight. Flyfisher

I'm still staying out of this

Buffy is mad as hell at me for not 'sticking up for her' and I don't know what to tell her. I see both sides of the fence.... What's a whore to do? Plus, my hard drive has been spitting nuts & bolts out at me - so I'm not on here like I usually am.
I am a bit knowledgeable in the legalities department - and I know only too well that what Counsel is concerned about is not paranoia.

Buffy's address
Posted by kenbo on October 06, 1997 at 15:21:59:While it is probably true that Buffy went overboard at times, she did add a very valuable perspective to the discussions on this board. I too miss her and hope that she returns soon. In the meantime, in spite of it having been on the board several hundred times, I can't find her address. Somebody, anybody please post it.

GP, how can you ban someone from the board, and let others post fake messages in their name?

I suspect that GP may not have even seen this "Buffy" post yet - it was made at 0200; Doc's was at 0800 - sometimes, as I recall, GP doesn't get to tend to the board until the evenings . . .

I thought people were banned by their tcp/ip address. So, if a banned person had another method of internet access, ....
Could have also been posted by Jeff, or some other soul, on behalf of Buffy.
Bash could disable certain names, but then they would just use a variation of their name to get by the screen.
