GP, Bashful:
Our little Cyber-world has grown leaps and bounds since the message board went instantaneous. Who could have foreseen it? We have a great electronic neighborhood. Pricing will taper growth and things will level out. Those who find this board of worth will remain and some form of normacly will be attained. I'm here for the long haul GeeDub

Dear Omerta and all other readers,
I agree with you, but right now Dimensional's $500 per gigabyte bandwidth rate will kill GP's website unless it gets moved soon, and I do mean soon! I had thought that archiving every two days would solve the problem, and though it has cut back the rate of growth of bandwidth usage, more and more people are using the system.
Now that I'm caught up with the field reports and some other things, I'm going to see about getting all posting access to the message board password protected. I will devote this coming weekend to doing that, though I'm not sure how long it will take. I'm doing more than just password protecting the script; I'm planning ahead for other things, and the expansion of the site.
It is GP's website, but I don't think that he is willing to allow advertising, so that means that those that use the message board will have to pay for their usage of its resources. GP can provide a free service to a small group of people, but not a large group of people.
I am going to think out loud here, and GP will have his own ideas, too. I am opposed to a flat, monthly fee. Instead, I can see giving people something like one free message per day, but for each and every message beyond that per day they will have to pay a certain as-yet-to-be-determined fee which will come out of their pre-paid account balance. There is a service called Ibill which will take your credit card number or you can call them at a 1-900 number, and they will give you an access code that will indicate to GP and I that you have paid. Neither GP nor I will be directly taking money from you, Ibill or some other such service will do that for us.
There will be free access to anyone and everyone who only wants to read the message board and will only post at most one free message a day, but then that means that everyone else will have to pay for their free usage, and the per-message fee with reflect that. And if GP doesn't get in enough money to support the message board (on it's new, normal bandwidth cost ISP), then the message board vanishes. Period.
The first step is to get the message board and website moved to a reasonable ISP, the second step is to password protect the message board, posting mechanism, and the third step is to set up the billing with a third party which will handle the credit card numbers or whatever.
Things can not stay the way that they were. More and more people are getting involved with the message board and the website. GP and I can easily give a small group of people a totally free service, but we are no longer servicing a small group of people so things will have to change.
Many of you have offered to donate money to help keep GP's website and message board free for everyone, and your offers have been appreciated, but eventually even your donations will not be able to keep up will the demands that the website's popularity are placing on resource availability.
Finally, I will again add that GP will have his own things to say on this topic, but he will agree that eventually you are going to have to pay.
Be seeing you.
Bashful

The real problem is not the posting of the msg. but the reading of the messages. Much more bandwith is used for reading than for posting.

Dear Old Hippy,
Yes, I already know that more bandwidth is used in reading the messages than in the posting.
Be seeing you.

The Great ISP Hunt
Posted by Counsel on November 05, 1997 at 10:04:19:OK, guys & gals. Fire up your browsers. Buy the latest copy of Boardwatch, and get their ISP lists. Get ISP lists online, and visit their sites. Visit all the adult sites. Visit other sites. And send them e-mail, and ask them:
1. What are their bandwidth charges? And how much do you charge after the free minimum (if any) has been surpassed?
2. Do you allow direct access by the users to cgi-bin?
3. Do you allow adult (non-graphical) content?
Get the info, and get it to Bash or GP.
